Behind the books: the pets of CLiF

February 2, 2012

Each month we take a moment for a fun behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of CLiF. Today we thought it would be fun to introduce you to the Pets of CLiF:

Toro

Owner: Matt Bushlow, Communications and Development Coordinator

Toro is your typical diva cat.  She’s obsessed with shadows, has a perch that allows her to watch the neighbor cat, and loves to read Vanity Fair.

Toro-Inspired Book:  If You Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Numeroff

Excerpt from Barnes & Noble: “The pair that educated us with If You Give a Pig a Party and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie return with another four-legged conundrum. Everybody knows that if you give a cat a cupcake, he’ll ask you for sprinkles to top it…and when you give a cat some sprinkles, we all know what happens: He spills them…. And, needless to say, this entertaining story goes on from there.”

Tasha

Owner: Duncan McDougall, Executive Director

Tasha is a Bernese Mountain Dog, a stoic breed of canine that historically helped farmers in the Swiss Alps tend to their herds.  Tasha greets the CLiF employees everyday and acts as our doorbell when new guests arrive!

Tasha-Inspired Book: Jules the Lighthouse Dog by PT Custer

Berner-Garde Foundation Review: “This delightful children’s book is about a bored Bernese Mountain Dog in search of a job. We join Jules in his search for a job, only to find it was right in front of him all the time. As he explores thoughts of all the more typical Berner or dog related jobs, the illustrations use a squirrel to help add some fun. As with so many children’s books, the fun is in finding many of the details in the drawings which aren’t immediately apparent.”

Sylvester

Owner: Julia Rogers, Office Manager

Sylvester is a Rottweiler-Malamute mix, but acts more like a lap cat!  Sylvester means “of the woods”, which is entirely appropriate considering he’s happiest while accompanying his owners on hikes and cross countries skis in the forests of Vermont.

Sylvester-Inspired Book: Carl’s Snowy Afternoon by Alexandra Day

The Carl series by Alexandra Day always warms my heart.  In this episode, toddler Madeleine’s parents go to a party and leave Carl and the baby at home for a cozy winter afternoon with a babysitter. But Carl and Madeleine have plans of their own— they want to play in the snow! After getting all bundled up, they sneak off to go sledding, build a snowman, and even make an appearance at the party and try sliding on the ice at the pond. Of course, resourceful Carl gets the baby home before her parents return—and the babysitter is never the wiser.

Madden

Owner: Suzanne Loring, Program Coordinator

Madden is a super-friendly lab mix who is always up for an adventure.  He has embraced his growing household, making room for two new little people in the past few years!

Madden-Inspired Book: Animal Ark: Labrador On the Lawn by Ben M. Baglio

Set at the Animal Ark rescue center, this story follows Mandy Hope as she helps her parents treat animals of all shapes and sizes. Even outside the clinic, Mandy can’t resist helping any animal in need.  Mandy and James are staying with her parents at a vacation house in the Lake District when they spot a mischievous Labrador on the lawn. James’s dog, Blackie, is thrilled to have found a friend, but with no identification or collar, how will the Hopes find her owner? And why does she seem so at home in the cottage?

Happy reading!
